The Romans developed a lot of infrastructure like roads and aqueducts to both help their cities flourish and to… you know… be better at war. But the interesting thing about Roman Engineering is how it was almost all focused on Techne and not Episteme. In this episode of Crash Course History of Science, Hank takes us down the road of road building, domes, and some really cool cement.

I once heard the Romans described as antiquity’s greatest engineers and antiquity’s worst scientists.
Love how Greek or Roman conquest is a “Supervillan Rampage” – funny how he never mentioned the same about Ashoka’s ancestors conquering in the India episode!
Seriously I love the shows, just is symptomatic of the apologetic tone for mentioning the Roman Empire.
What's a "proto novel"? I'd like an example of a sort of but not quite novel, please.
Picture of the acropolis built by the Greeks? Have I got that wrong?
Really good, informative, intelligent, I love the fact that it is aimed at a fairly educated audience… but as such, I think you could trust our attention span to be long enough to listen without you speaking so, so fast. I, for one, really do not require it…
Thanks!
10:49 Is a phrase that sounds good, but it is false. The tools that previous civilizations left us are as good as they are useful. They are not as good as how well those civilization fit our modern ideals and morality.

Romans never questioned the nature of matter or right angles in engineering? Wot m8?
They also murdered more people than any other nation.

pretty apt expect that the legions built many of the roads, aqueducts, and fortifications as make work to keep them too busy to think about rebellion.
I resent your characterization of conquest as a "super villain rampage" – it makes you sound effeminate and weak.
