The ones at the store are labeled as "fluted shank masonry nails".
Is this our modern choice for cut nails?
Not sure what I’m doing incorrectly, I’ve tried both pine and oak boards with cut nails, doesn’t matter the orientation of the nail, and nailing it with the grain, the piece almost always splits in half before the nail is all the way through
New wood worker from an old Colonial Swedish Territory furniture family. Never thought I would get into wood. I always thoyght it took roo many skills for me. Nearing 60 and not a male, i am excited wnery day building my workbench.
When I was a kid my father taught me if you flip a nail over and flatten the tip of the nail a little bit then it would act like a cut nail and not split the wood.
It’s like the old card they last the longest and like the old houses in Europe. They are all 300 and 500 years old. ❤
Very good! Thank you.
I noticed your lovely GraphGear 1000 mechanical pencil
So im new to wood working but have been building houses for almost ten years.
I came across this cause i was looking for a way to not have to stop driving nails. But i dont get it.
I understand the science behind why they are stronger but i dont think that means wire nails arent getting the job done.
Im pretty sure you could nail a piece of furniture together with modern common nails and have it last just as long.
Theres never going to be an obscene amount of weight on it like in any nail test.
Are woodworkers interested in using old square nails? I have old, unused square nails and was wondering
4:24 Unlike my wife.
I'm thrilled to see this video has 1.8 million views. Maybe there's hope for the next generations after all. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I feel like – for once – I didn't waste my time on the internet after watching this. Blessings.
James, you totally nailed it with this video, both literally and mataphorically.
A very good presentation due in no small part to being a very effective speaker…the guy knows his subject, knows what he wants to impart and simply does it. (Would that even a fraction of YT content providers be so prepared…)
I was searching for how to cut nail extensions. I have no idea how i ended up here…
Fascinating, thank you!
This kinda content is perfect for a procrastination youtube visionquest. I don't need to know this stuff, but now i do, and its unexpectedly interesting!
Thanks Nubs, very informative!
One thing that I try to do with reg nails is flatten the tip of the nails when I'm worried about splitting wood near the end of the piece of wood.
Would it be possible to make a table utilizing cut nails? I am wondering if there are plans or other ideas (or precautions) for recreating a simple harvest/farm table utilizing cut nails.
I always tap the tip of a nail on a hard surface before driving it. An old trick I heard about long ago. Obviously taken from the old style tapered nails.
I never really thought about that before but I think for my next project I will try and find some of thoes cut tapered nails!
Near the end of the roman republic one of Caesars greatest obstacles was the man who made his wealth by controlling the nail crafting trade in Rome.
“Roman nails! Come get your roman nails! When you need to crucify a heathen, Give roman nails a beatin’! *by using Roman Nails you agree that Roman Nails inc. cannot be held responsible for any resurrection occurring to anyone on whom Roman Nails have been used.
I just googled "cut nails"and came up with a lot of Vietnamese-owned shops staffed by Asian women wearing masks. Strange.
excellent video thank you, and you speak very well, great delivery, clear, well thought out.
Thanks for sharing
Not in contadiction to your message just a word obout application of wire nails. The point of a wire nail has cutting and splitting built in. Looking at the end you will see flat surfaces opposite each other and cutting edges opposite each other. When you look for this and start the nail with the cutting edges lined up to cut across the grain splitting will be diminished. The flat surface will certainly split the wood if installed parallel to the grain. And there is striking the point of the nail to flatten the point so the wood fibers are cut as the nail enters the board.
I have some antique furniture that uses cut nails
Great video as always. In UK you can get round nails or rather I've seen some in larger size like 150mm (6" in US) but all the ones I use and are the norm are oval wire nails. Any better than round nails? Yes cut nails far superior but seems not in fashion, guess the price?
Great video. My question is which way do you face the taper. I am laying 5/8 x 6" hemlock flooring onto spruce sleeper joists running at 90 degrees. My thinking is that the taper should be with the grain on the joist and the pilot hole in the hemlock should be large than the width of the taper as to not split the ends.
