Civilization technological progress can be correlated to access to a diverse group of domesticated animals.

In Europe for example you had cattle, horses, sheep, chicken, and all the other usual suspects at a farm while if you looked at the same time period of South American civilizations they had Lamas and that was pretty much it.

This mattered because you could use big animals like ox to plow your farms, sheeps wole for clothing, horses for traveling, and of course the access to easier sources of meat.

Places like Africa and South America you had far more animals able to kill you and more difficult to capture and domesticate hindering humans in those areas.
