Afraid of mosquito bites and malaria? Your worries could end very soon. Researchers from Brown University have come up with a smart fix. They conducted a series of experiments to show that skin covered with a layer of graphene oxide is less susceptible to nasty mosquito bites. Graphene oxide blocks the signals that mosquitoes receive from human skin. Mosquitoes are also unable to bite through this unique material. This is indeed a smart and chemical-free way of preventing mosquito bites. So don’t feel surprised if you see graphene-lined garments at your nearest shopping mall sometime soon. Published as a research report in PNAS. Link:
Cilantro has been traditionally used to reduce the occurrence of epileptic and non-epileptic seizures. However, the exact mechanism of action was not known so far. Scientists have now discovered that cilantro is a potent potassium channel (KCNQ) activator. This study was published in the FASEB Journal (h-index: 257). Publication link:
Mind-boggling cosmic discovery! According to a Nature Astronomy report, scientists have been successful in discovering a planet (“K2-18b”) with water and temperatures favorable for life. It is 124 light-years away from your place of residence on planet earth. Book your trip today. Publication link:
Researchers from the University of Bristol recently studied a patient with permanent vision loss and found out that bad nutrition was the primary culprit. Still enjoying chips, fries, and cola? Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University have designed new “GymCams” for the efficient detection of repetitions; motions that ordinary gadgets such as smartwatches cannot track with sufficient accuracy. These cameras work on the principle of pixel-based motion detection and they do not capture or even require personal data such as facial photographs. Wearable devices currently being used for this purpose do record repetitions, but they have their own limitations. For example, a wearable smartwatch tied to the wrist simply cannot detect leg presses. Publication link (downloadable .pdf):
According to a PLOS ONE research study, antibiotics entering into rivers can cause a surge in antibiotic-resistant superbugs. Physicians must prescribe antibiotics carefully and only when truly warranted. People must adopt preventive measures in order to prevent bacterial infections in the first place. More research is required for effective effluent treatment.
Nowadays, teenagers are facing psychological issues because of excessive social media usage, according to researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Children in the age range 13 to 17 were interrogated by researchers. According to the researchers, kids who spend more than 3 hours on social media every day, tend to display a variety of psychological problems. This landmark study has been published in JAMA Psychiatry (h-index: 335) and is a clear wake-up call for responsible parents. Publication link:
A hydrogel developed by Ventrix, a Californian biotechnology company, is showing great promise in treating damaged cardiac muscles. Ventrix successfully finished Phase 1 of the NIH-approved clinical trial and is looking forward to initiating Phase 2. VentriGel, after being injected into the bodies of patients with damaged heart muscles, was found to repair the same. This was evident from the follow-ups conducted six months later. VentriGel is expected to not only heal the damaged heart muscles, but also to improve their overall functioning. Publication link:
